The dad had been paying the son’s pricey Manhattan rent and was also giving him spending money. He cut the latter down a bit and paid for it with his life. This is obviously an extreme example of what happens with Baby Boomers overparent theirMillennialchildren, hovering over them like helicopters and protecting them from any remote adversity or failure. But more generally, I fear that these parents (no offense Boomers) have produced a generation of employees who arrive at work completely unable to problem-solve. Managers constantly complain to me that their reports need way too much hand-holding. Well, the truth is, we don’t help the situation when webail them outmore than we should because it makes our lives easier. Remember the old adage: “give a man fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime.” When it comes to yourteam members’ productivity, it’s in your best interest if they are as self-sufficient as possible. Here are a few suggestions for making that happen. Give Them a Blank Piece of Paper Consider delegatingthings that you have traditionally done yourself. Provide any necessary training and after a complete debrief that offers aclear direction, assign a task that has clear boundaries but also allows your employee to be creative in exactly how she gets it done. Giving a report the freedom to be independent is an important first step. Demonstrate Your Confidence Employees who haven’t had much experience completing work ormaking decisionson their own are often insecure. Tell your report that you hired him for a reason, and that you have complete faith in his ability to successfully complete the task. If he starts to freak out, tell him that no one ever died as a result of your company’s daily operations. It’s just work, and work will always be there. Big news Happy links - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Ive been absent from my blog for a couple of days things have been crazy busy here at Happiness HQ. Ive been selling and doing speaking gigs like crazy in fact I have another one in 3 hours, so this will be a brief message. Anyway, Im back and Ive got great news: Ive added a new feature to the blog called (so far, until we come up with a better name) Happy Links. Its a place where you can discover and vote on great stories, links and blogposts about happiness at work. You can also submit great stuff that youve found or created. Start the New Year by setting meaningful career goals I am excited about my upcoming speaking event for Slalom Consulting women’s group on January 16th in Buckhead. I will be speaking about Setting Meaningful Goals: Live and Work with Passion and Purpose. The start of a new year is the perfect time to set meaningful goals. The key to achieving your goals is to make sure that they are based on your values. To set goals that you are more motivated to complete, attach them to what’s most meaningful to you. Values are your guidepost to fulfillment. That is why it is one of the first things I have my career coaching clients identify to help them with their career path. Attaching goals to values ensures that you are more likely to achieve them, and once you have you will be that much more fulfilled. Your values can help you identify your most meaningful talents or passions too, which can also help you achieve your career goals. What are you really good at? What do you really enjoy doing? Focus on what values are really important to you and use these as clues to get your answers. For example, maybe one of your values is to use your time responsibly. That could be a clue that you are good at scheduling your time and are good at being organized. This is a great talent to identify for your career journey. Another example is maybe you value the environment. This could tie into a passion such as conservation or going green. Identifying your values can really help set the course for your career path.
